Hancock review

starring:willsmith,Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman, Adam Del Rio, Jameson Dixon Jr.
Hancock Review2 stars
The glut of super-hero summer movies coughed up by Hollywood continues with "Hancock". Comparisons with the likes of the already released "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk" and the yet to be released "The Dark Knight" and "Hellboy" are unavoidable; though it is clear that "Hancock" falls short of all these movies.

The movie is a wasted opportunity. Will Smith, the most dependable Hollywood actor right now, with his last nine movies topping the box office, plays an unlovable superhero who goes through a transformation.

It is a very promising premise, but the writers Vincent Ngo and Vince Gilligan along with director Peter Berg seem to lose their bearings half way and allow the movie to take one of the most bizarre and wholly boring twists in any Hollywood movie this year.

Not even the talented Oscar winning actress Charlize Theron and the dependable Jason Bateman can rescue or clarify this muddle of a movie.

Smith is Hancock, the superhero with good intentions but bad PR skills and even poorer hygiene. He cannot resist helping anyone in need, but much to the annoyance of the residents of Los Angeles, he does more harm than good. His rescues end up costing the city millions of dollars in damages.

One day Hancock rescues an altruistic but failed PR man Ray who offers to refine him and make him presentable as a superhero. This takes up the first 20 minutes or so of the movie and is actually pretty entertaining. The wheels start coming off when Hancock starts taking an interest in Ray's wife and the movie proceeds to explain this attraction.

Since it is a blockbuster, the movie has the luxury of money and does a good job with the action sequences and special effects. But the true thrills in the movie are the scenes where Hancock is making efforts to be nicer and presentable.

Smith, with his wholesome reputation, asks the audience to stretch their imagination in having to believe his crass attitude early in the movie. Fortunately, those scenes are few and brief and it is not long before he goes about smashing things.

Smith cements his reputation as the most dependable action if not superstar in Hollywood right now. This movie will not have quite the shine as "Independence Day" or "I, Robot" and he displays much better acting skills in "The Pursuit of Happyness" and "I am Legend". He was able to surprise us with his acting range.

"Hancock" sadly doesn't even put up any acting challenge before him and that is another reason the movie is a wasted opportunity.

"Hancock" never forgets that it is a summer blockbuster action movie, and in many ways it delivers in the way action movie fans would expect. They will not be disappointed. For those who can put up with a digressing plot line but not at the cost of some action and special effects, "Hancock" delivers.

Marriage announcement very soon: Saif Ali Khan

Wedding bells may not be that far away for actors Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor as the two are contemplating marriage sooner than the three-four-year target they had set earlier.

"Oh yes, much sooner. In fact, people may be hearing an announcement from us very soon. If I had my way, I'd marry her today right here in London where she's joined me," Saif told IANS over phone.

"Yes, I'm ready to make it legal any time. In any case, aren't we supposed to have gone through a secret Muslim marriage?" he says sarcastically about certain media reports.

Saif was married to Amrita Singh and after 13 years of marriage and two children, the couple separated in 2004. After he divorced Amrita, he dated Italian model Rosa Catalano, but broke up with her in 2007.

The romance between Saif and Kareena took off on the sets of "Tashan". And Saif has never sounded so fiercely committed.

"If I'm sounding that way, it's because that's how I feel. With due respects to all the other relationships in life, after my marriage to Amrita and my two kids, this is the most important relationship I've had."

Saif can barely contain his anxiety and eagerness to do the right thing.

"Of course, I'm anxious. You must understand this is the most important part of my life... so much so that at times I find even my career taking a backseat to my relationship. I've to guard against that. I must quickly learn to separate the professional from the personal."

Saif admits it would take his children Sarah and Ibrahim a while to get used to the changes in their dad's life.

"I'm not going to pretend that my children, Kareena and I have become one big family. They're intelligent kids with a mind of their own. Sarah is in fact 13 and a lady herself. It would be quite a while before they are fully comfortable with the change in my life.

"They haven't spent that much time with Kareena to know her as well as I do. But the good thing is everyone close to me realises that this relationship is for keeps, that I've never been more serious. Now it's entirely up to me and Kareena to take the relationship to the next level."

Saif is upset with reports that he has lately been crowding his ladylove with his attentions.

"Of course, I want to be with her as much as I can. My regret is we can't be together more often. We are uncannily similar people and I've only now begun to understand why I need to be with her constantly. She complements me, as I hope I complement her. So of course, I try to be where she is."

He dislikes people intruding into his personal life and says: "I understand people want to put our relationship under a microscope. They want to know about our relationship. But there's only so much that they can know or perceive. What Kareena and I feel for each other, only the two of us know."

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na Movie Review

jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na - Could have been so much better

Amir Khan who has known to be an ace when it comes to selecting scripts and venturing into production, provides his nephew Imran the much awaited launch. Jaane Tu… also marks the directorial debut of screenplay and dialogue writer Abbas Tyrewala.

So does Aamir strike yet another ‘Taare Zameen Par’?

Synopsis…

Jai [Imran Khan] and Aditi [Genelia] are buddies who hang out with their group of friends, but have eyes for each other only. Their friends know that Jai and Aditi are perfect for each other. Their parents know this as well. Everybody knows this. But the couple doesn't. So when do they realize its love?

Jaane Tu … comes across as a complete college teen flick. Director Abbas Tyrewala does succeed to a certain extent in bringing forth the so called ‘college days’ back to the viewer. The movie takes off well with the comic characters and events attached with college and every college group etc.

The 1st half is indeed very entertaining right from the opening scene of a funeral to the bonding between Jai( Imraan ) and Athiti( Genelia). Even the songs in the 1st half are so refreshing with ‘Athithi’ and ‘Pappu can’t dance’. Do watch out for Sohail Khan and Arbaaz’s guest appearance. It’s hilarious, especially the scene where Imran rescues Meghna (Manjiri) from them.

Sounds really great! But the big letdown comes with Abbas Tyrewala’s writing in the 2nd half. The movie suddenly takes a dip and the plot is loosely held. The intercuts to the narration of the story by a bunch of friends at the airport gets annoying as it slows the pace of the flick. The group goes bla bla bla with their poor jokes and it bores.

The plot lacks conviction eventually and the fact that Atithi(Genelia ) misses Jai(Imran) and vice versa inspite of being in another relationship fails to come across strongly. The movie just becomes a series of parties.

The movie has a terrific music album composed by A.R.Rahman. The saddest bit comes across with the film skipping two terrific numbers ‘Jaane tu mera kya tha’ male and female version. How could one omit a Rahman composition sung by Sukhwinder Singh? Also the movie fails to capitalize on Rahman’s ‘Jaane Kahan Who Duniya’ which had the potential of being the next ‘Pehla Nasha’ and ends up being just another party number.

Imran Khan really impresses and no doubt lives up to his Chachajaan Aamir’s expectations. We have another Aamir in the making I suppose. Imran’s expressions are terrific. Observe the sequence where he goes to meet Genelia’s parents and the opening college fight scene. He does a bit of Aamir Khan from Ghulam when he sets off to Ayaz Khan’s home for revenge. The scene at the airport brings in Imran at his best.

Genelia comes in with all that masti(fun) and air of freshness. She is cute, delivers well and portrays the character of the wild, crazy , possessive Atithi with ease and is par excellence. She is superb and being already a big sensation down south , she is sure to hit Bollywood by storm.

Naseerudin Shah has a very hilarious role and does really well. Ratna Pathak is just apt as the mother. Paresh Rawal is ok. Arbaaz and Sohail are hilarious. Ayaz Khan fits the bill and so does Manjari. Prateik Babbar the son of Raj Babbar and the late Smita Patil doesn’t go unnoticed as Genelia’s brother. The other characters within the group such as Jiggy, Rotlu and Boms fit the bill.

Jaane Tu … definitely comes in with an air of freshness with the likes of Genelia and Imran. The film dips post interal but still has its moments. It’s sure to impress at least the youth. As for Genelia and Imran , they have left behind their footprints in Bollywood.

Genelia reveals Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na details

Genelia reveals the secrets of the sets during the shooting of Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na and why she believes that Imran is already a hit.

The promos of Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na are fabulous and you have never looked so good before. So what's the secret with the new glowing look? I am not too sure. Nothing in particular.

With just a week to go before Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na hits theatres, what's the feeling like?

Well, I am very anxious and looking forward to the release. I look at this film as a big opportunity. I hope that people appreciate the film and my work.

It's a perfectly young film about youngsters. The film talks about friendship, love, first crush and literally takes you back to your college days

The promos of the film show it as a sugar sweet romantic flick. Could you tell us a little more about the film?

It's a perfectly young film about youngsters. It's not just a romantic film, though romance forms an integral part of the film. It's also about friendship and the friends play a very important part in the film. The film talks about friendship, love, first crushes and literally takes you back to your college days

I may not be wrong in saying that no other song has probably popularized a character as much as Kabhi Kabhi Aditi has. So what is Aditi like in the film?

Aditi is a brat. She is an extremist. She would laugh out loud and howl and scream and cry. And for her, Jai (Imran) means everything; if someone messes around with Jai then she abuses them with the choicest of expletives. But overall, Aditi is full of life and complete fun to be with.

How much are you like Aditi? Did you identify with the character?

Very much, except for the fact that I don't abuse like Aditi. I could relate to Aditi as she is very much like how I was during my college days. If I like someone be it a friend or anyone else, then I would go all out for that person even to the extent of being possessive about him/her. So yes, I am very much like Aditi though I feel I have mellowed down a bit now.

Imran is shown as a darpok and you are shown as completely bindaas, quite contrary to people's expectations. What's the rationale behind that?

Actually, he is not a darpok. It's Aditi who keeps calling him a darpok. If there is a fight, Jai wouldn't react to it, on the other hand Aditi loves to go out and have a fight and punch the living daylights out of that guy. So you can say Jai is a sane kid and Aditi is a complete psycho.

In the film, you call yourself Meow and him (Imran) Rats. What's with the nicknames?

Imran's name is Jai Singh Rathore so that's why 'rats'. I am Aditi Mahang and I love cats so that's how 'meow'. Moreover, since she feels he is a darpok, she calls him 'rats'. Also, it's only Aditi who has the right and privilege of addressing Jai by the name rats. Aditi on the other hand is like this cat which will scratch anyone who takes messes with her or Jai.

In real life do you have a pet name?

They call me Geenu. My name Genelia is a combination of my mom and dad's name (Jeaneate and Neil). I keep asking my mom what Genelia means and she says it means rare or unique so I think that's what it means.

You worked with Riteish in his first film Tujhe Meri Kasam and now are working with another newcomer Imran. Riteish has gone on to become a big star today. Do you think the Genelia effect will rub off on Imran too?

Now that's something which I didn't think about. To be frank, I don't have a say in Riteish becoming a star today. I just hope Jaane Tu works. I hope it works for Imran's sake. I really hope he becomes the next big thing. In fact, all my girl friends have already gone crazy after Imran, so I am pretty sure many more girls will fall for him after seeing the film.

Imran and you are shown as 'best buddies' in the film. So was it the same off-screen too?

Strangely from the day we met, we hit it off. We even screen tested together. We were super comfortable with each other from the first day itself. In fact, I was whacking him right from the first day. It was just like how Aditi and Jai are in the film.

What's the one thing that annoys you the most about Imran?

His euphemism jokes which only he and Abbas understand most of the time.

Jaane Tu… has a host of other character artists. Who is your favorite and why?

I really like Imran's character. Besides that there is Shaleen's character played by Sugandha whom I was really close with. Jaane Tu is cast so perfectly because Shaleen is the next best friend to Aditi after Jai and even off screen Imran and Sugandha were my best buddies.

The initial promos gave an impression of a love story but now it seems like a love triangle with Manjari also in the frame. Is that the case?

I am not telling you that, you will have to watch it for yourselves. But Manjari has a pivotal role in the film.

This is Abbas Tyrewala's first film as a director. How was the experience to work with him. He had said in an interview that he is no less of a perfectionist than Aamir. Is it true?

Abbas is a perfectionist but he is not a taskmaster. Abbas was more of a friend on the sets. That's his biggest plus point. We didn't have a generation gap with Abbas, generally a director is put on a pedestal but with Abbas, he was like one amongst us. We had workshops in Panchgani which was great fun and we chatted a lot. Abbas has this unique knack of restricting you as an actor but when he tells you something you will do exactly the way he wants it. In fact when I look back, I am simply amazed by his clarity of thought. He is a fantastic actor and storyteller and hence he is such a brilliant director.

Did you get any chance to interact with Aamir Khan? How was the experience?

I am one of the lucky few who got a chance to interact with Aamir because Aamir was never on the sets. I met Aamir before I was signed on. My first meeting was with Aamir, Kiran Rao and Abbas. Abbas was skeptical about me because he was insisting on casting a newcomer for the role of Aditi. It was Aamir who said that 'she is perfect for the role. And when someone fits the character so well, one shouldn't really worry if it's a newcomer or a known face'. I am so glad that I managed to convince them.

The film has some really peppy songs and some soulful numbers by AR Rahman. Which one is your personal favorite and why?

Definitely Kabhi Kabhi Aditi. I was really upset that I had to be sad and mournful during the whole shooting of the Aditi song. I was telling Abbas 'you can't do this to me'. This is punishment. The moment he called cut. I was jumping and dancing. It is very difficult to keep a sullen face and shoot for a song like Aditi.

Did you ever expect that the song would go on to become such a rage?

Yes, because when you are shooting, you usually get bored of a song after repeatedly hearing it. With Aditi it was not the case and even after pack up we would listen to the song and all the technicians and crew would dance to the song. That's when I realized we had a hit song.

Since you were all a bunch of youngsters, shooting must have been like one big picnic. Any interesting incidents which took place during the shoot.

Imran likes to tell everyone that he was my spot boy but that isn't true. When we were shooting outside, I had to wash my hair and Imran helped me wash my hair, He actually carried the water cans so that I could wash my hair with that water. Ever since then he keeps fooling around saying that he is my spot boy.

Was Imran given any special treatment considering he was working in his home production? Were you bothered that you would be over-shadowed by all the hype surrounding his launch?

Imran was one of us. He didn't receive any special treatment and as for your second question, I don't know why anyone would be bothered. I am sure the rest of the world wants to know who Imran Khan is more than who Genelia is but that's because it's his debut film and the fact that it's an Aamir Khan Production.

Initially, there would be more attention towards Imran but I am glad because all I want at the end of the day is my film to work. Having no backbone in this industry, this is probably the best way for me to get noticed.

Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na is releasing with yet another biggie Love Story 2050 which marks Harman Baweja's debut. Do you think the clash could have been avoided?

I don't know about it. I am working with Harman in one of my future films. He is a fantastic actor and a wonderful co-star. I wonder if he has a spring in his body. His body keeps moving in all possible directions. Since Imran and Harman are both my co-stars, I am hoping the best for both our films because as much as Imran is a co-star, even Harman is a co-star.

What else do you have in the pipeline after Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na?

I have Anees Bazmee's film alongside Harman Baweja. It's the role of a lifetime. The film is a remake of two of my very successful films from down south. Though the film looks simple on screen it has been a real task shooting, I am there in every frame of the film even though the film is about a father and son relationship (Nana Patekar and Harman). Besides that I am doing Abbas- Mustan's Life Partner directed by Rumi Jaffrey but it is too early to talk about it now.

Finally what makes Jaane Tu… different from the countless romantic-comedies which we have seen so far?

I honestly believe that a love story does not have to be different. It just has to be relatable. whenever my younger brother sees a promo of Jaane Tu he says 'damn, this is so much like how I and my friends hang out'. I am sure if all the youngsters feel the same, we have pretty much struck a chord.

On a closing note is Genelia in love?

Right now I would like to say, I am only in love with my work and my dogs

Salman, Aamir recreate Andaz Apna Apna magic

They are cool, charismatic, and super dynamic, and when they come together on screen it's indeed a dream come true. Aamir Khan and Salman Khan made a dynamic duo some 14 years ago and their ensemble presence still manages to evoke the same old magic even today.

Close on the heels of Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na, the famous uncle-nephew jodi of Aamir Khan and Imran Khan make an appearance on Salman Khan's popular game show 10 Ka Dum.

The episode starts with Aamir and Salman entering the sets on a cycle to the beats of the super-hit song Do mastana chale zindagi banane from their smash hit film, Andaz Apna Apna.

They entered the sets with so much of energy that the studio audience went crazy. The audience cheered and clapped aloud on seeing their favorite stars together.

Salman introduced Aamir as the man who needs no introduction and said, Yeh to purush hi nahin hain…Yeh Mahapurush hai!" Incidentally, this is also a memorable line from Andaz Apna Apna. Both the actors did indeed brought back memories of their comic caper, Andaz Apna Apna on the show.

jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na music review

Banner: Aamir Khan Productions, PVR Cinema
Cast: Imraan Khan Genelia Dsouza, Ratna Pathak
Direction: Abbas Tyrewala
Production: Mansoor Khan, Aamir Khan
Music: A R Rahman

‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ music releases very much the Aamir Khan style under the hands of mentor Shammi Kapoor. The movie produced by Aamir Khan might just prove to be the perfect launch pad for nephew Imraan Khan. The movie promises more with director Abbas Tyrewala penning down some beautiful lines and with the ace A.R.Rahman at work.

The album opens to some fine guitar beats in complete symphony with the youthful and melodious voice of debutant Rashid Ali supporting the charming looks of yet another debutant Imraan Khan. The track ‘Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi’ , has already been creating the required buzz with the current promos and is sure to be remembered as one of the top tracks of the year.

Anupama, Benny Dayal, Blazee, Tanvi, Darshana, Satish Subramanium and Aslam bring in the ‘Pappu can’t dance’ number . The song has already had its share of hype thanks to the lyrical links to bollywood hunk Salman Khan. Though Aamir has cleared the apparent links to Salman by stating that Salman is indeed a better dancer, the audiences may still carry the Salman-Pappu linkage.

Though the track reminds you of Rahman’s ‘Girlfriend ‘number from ‘Boys’, it fails to make the same impact. The music is loud and calls for all the Pappu’s to prove their might. The remix version in indeed racy and the track is set to do well with the ongoing promotion.

‘Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai( Aditi)’ has been rendered by yet another newcomer Runa. The lines of this one along with the soft background beats enhanced by the vocals provides for a great track for those lovelorn or solitude seeking personalities.

The male version of the track ‘Jaane Tu Meri Kya Hai(Jai)’ crooned by the brazen Sukwinder Singh grabs you with the very first go. Sukwinder makes you feel for the broken hearted and takes you to just another world.

'Nazrein Milaana Nazrein Churaana' yet again brings in a bunch of talent in the form of Benny Dayal, Satish Chakravarthy, Naresh Iyer, Darshana, Shwetha, Tanvi, Bhargavi, Anupama. The composition is very much like a Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy saga but it just shows you how versatile Rahman can get. The track though isn’t the finest around but tends to grow on you after a while. Some good promotion will boost it further.

'Tu Bole Main Boloon', which apparently is the title track of the movie, brings in some beautiful composition enhanced by Rahman’s vocals. The lines of the track too draw some attention. The track brings in the western jazz feel and is one of those quietly funny yet romantic numbers that explore the differences between a girl and boy.

'Kahin To Hogi Ho' equates to being exactly what ‘Pehla Nasha’ was to ‘Joh Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’. The soulfully power packed track brings forth Rashid Ali to deliver his second splendid number on his debut album. Vasundhra Das provides some back up on the vocals. This one is sure to be a favorite amongst the ones in love or the lovelorn listeners. The serenity just grabs you instantly as the track unveils. As for Rashid Ali , he seems to be Rahman’s next Naresh Iyer(who made his mark with ‘Ru Ba Ru’ in ‘Rang De Basanti’).

On the whole, Rahman returns to such youthful campus love story after a hiatus but still proves he’s got enough romance running right through. The album backed by Abbas Tyrewala’s lyrics provides enough support for his directorial venture. As for Imraan , looks like the music promises the same platform that Uncle Aamir Khan had with ‘Qayamant Se Qayamat Tak’ and ‘Joh Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’.

Love Story 2050 preview

Hindi filmdom's most ambitious futuristic sci-fic - “Love Story 2050” - seems set to up the standards of special effects in the country, with a reported budget of Rs.500 million propping it.

Transformation of Mumbai into a super-futuristic metropolis, modelled on Shanghai, robot, teddy bears and an energy-blasting fight scene are some of the visual treats awaiting viewers when the film by director Harry Bajewa goes on the marquees on July 4.

Introducing Harman Baweja opposite star actor Priyanka Chopra, “Love Story 2050” is heavy on special effects and gizmos and may just be the impetus needed for filmmakers in India to invest in the country's own sprouting industry.

Even as India is emerging as the destination of choice for Hollywood studios to outsource their animation and special effects jobs, domestic film studios have been treading cautiously and are only now warming up to pumping big monies into the digital sphere.

Hindi filmmakers have for long shied away from investing huge sums on special effects and instead preferred to park most of the film's budget for remunerations of stars. As a result, though the country has the wherewithal that meets international standards, films churned in Bollywood suffer from tacky effects and graphics.

In fact, the Oscar-winning special effects for “The Golden Compass”, the Hollywood blockbuster that took $370 million at the box office last Christmas, were put together in India.

Increasingly, post-production movie work - everything from complex digital effects such as the talking armoured polar bears in “The Golden Compass”, one of which sported a fur coat with seven million individually rendered hairs, to basic colour grading, making sure shades stay consistent throughout a film - is steadily migrating from traditional centres such as Los Angles to low-cost locations on the sub-continent.

Nasscom, the Indian IT industry lobby group, estimates that the global animation market will be worth about $80 billion by 2010, and is targeting it as a prime source of future outsourcing revenues as more film work is shifted to India from the US and Europe.

Yet, Indian filmmakers form a very small portion of their clientele. The budget of “Love Story 2050” may sound high enough, but it is not.

“It is impossible to match the kind of standards that our counterparts from the West have set. It all boils down to the budget at the end of the day and with the kind of resources we work with, even though we may hire the best team out there, you can't expect results on the same lines,” says a candid Harman.

Nevertheless, the Indian filmmakers are hoping to ripe a good harvest from film merchandise and sale of rights to mobile and gaming companies to recover costs.

“Love Story 2050” features a fully animatronic robot teddy bear which was created by Oscar winner John Cox, who also worked on “Babe” and “The Host”. It also features a female robot. Similarly, airborne fight sequences will lead to spin offs like video and mobile gaming.

If India is to become more than just outsourcing sweatshops that sketched, painted and digitised ordered content, fully indigenous innovative breakthroughs are the need of the hour. And this can only happen if creative minds join hands with technical talents and create a fully Indian version of “Babe”.

With the growth in the outsourcing model reaching a plateau, big players claiming ownership of their products is the need of the hour as this co-production yields multiple sources of revenue from merchandising to licensing.

Kids lapped up Hrithik Roshan starrer "Krrish", which was loaded with special effects.

All eyes are now set on “Love Story 2050". Come Friday and both the film as well as the digital worlds will be hoping for audiences to embrace “Love Story 2050”, its hero and its lovable teddy bear - Boo.

Review and Rating- Incredible Hulk

Rating: 5/5

Hollywood Says

This time they got it right; The Hulk really IS incredible! Iron Man was just the warm up for this mega-tons of fun, super powered summer movie adrenaline blast that will probably have you leaping out of your seat.

Story
Chronicled before in countless comic books, a ‘70s television series and, of course, Ang Lee’s critically lambasted 2003 big screen version, The Incredible Hulk remains one of Marvel’s treasured creations. The innate story revolves around scientist Dr. Bruce Banner, whose cells are poisoned by gamma radiation and who frequently unleashes his inner monster--the mean green machine known as the Hulk. Thankfully, this spruced-up version doesn’t waste a lot of time giving us the back story. Instead, it launches right into the problems at hand. Banner (Edward Norton), now forced to be apart from the love of his life Dr. Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) and living on the edges of society, is desperately looking for the antidote that will cure him of his unique rage. His immediate task, however, is avoiding the dogged pursuit of the U.S. military machine aiming--led by Betty’s father, General Ross (William Hurt)--to exploit his unique powers. This quest has led them all to the outskirts of Brazil, where Banner is on the loose. Ross employs the services of super-soldier Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) to do the deed, a job that leads to Blonsky’s own re-invention as The Abomination--and setting up the ultimate battle of battles when both are back in America.

Acting
Marvel Studios is on a roll when it comes to unique casting ideas this summer. First, they re-ignited 40-something Robert Downey Jr.’s career in an inspired idea to make him Iron Man--and now travel the unlikely route of putting Edward Norton, a fine actor not known for popcorn action fare, in the Bruce Banner part. Norton brings an urgency, wit and intelligence to the role that was sorely missing when Eric Bana took it on in Lee’s version. We really understand the anger raging within, and Banner’s determined desire to get rid of it. Just as in classic movie monsters like King Kong, there is great empathy for the monster that is unleashed in the form of the Hulk . Much of that is do to Norton’s smart take and dedication (he’s an uncredited co-writer) in creating this incarnation of Banner. He owns this role now. Whatever reported conflicts happened in production, the final results are worth it. Tyler’s Betty Ross is nicely played and full of the appropriate passion, while Tim Blake Nelson has some hilarious super-hyper moments as the scientist who may hold the key to Banner’s salvation. Hurt is properly authoritative and evil as the General out for Banner’s power. And finally Roth, scrappy and fierce as Norton’s main nemesis and his perfect match.

Direction
Young French director Louis Leterrier (Transporter 2) proves the perfect choice to finally make Hulk work on screen. His fast-paced, take-no-prisoners filmmaking style--mixed with his professed love of all things Hulk when he was growing up as a kid in Paris--have paid off handsomely. He clearly has a vision and moves this thing along like a freight train, almost a non-stop chase in the same spirit that powered last summer’s supreme sequel The Bourne Ultimatum. Not shackled with Ang Lee’s problems in creating a credible monster, Leterrier is the beneficiary of strong advances in CGI and the Hulk and Abomination are both state-of-the-art iconic visual effects. The ultimate “Godzilla vs Mothra”-style battle at the end is flawlessly pulled off and a marvel to watch (pun intended). Leterrier has achieved some of the best action sequences ever, but not at a human cost, which is really remarkable in a summer comic book blockbuster like this. At the center are recognizable people we can root for--and against--right up to the end of the breezy 104-minute running time when an unexpected cameo in the form of another comic book superstar makes a surprise appearance.
